Key Safety Guidelines
A summary of the most important points covered in the video above.
Dress Code
Wear an apron and tie your hair back before you begin. Avoid loose sleeves, scarves, or any flammable clothing near the flame.
Graphite Pad Rules
Always place the front sections of your tools and glass rods on the graphite pad β never near your hands. Hot ends cause burns instantly.
Preheat Your Glass
Start from a distance and slowly move glass rods into the flame. Every rod must be fully preheated before working β never rush this step.
Tools Stay Out of the Flame
Soften the glass in the flame first, then remove it and use your tool to shape it. If a tool enters the flame it may bond to the glass β very dangerous.
If Tool Bonds to Glass
Never knock them apart. Place both into a cup of water (preferably stainless steel) β they will separate safely on their own.
Cool Hot Tools with Water
Keep a cup of water nearby. If a tool becomes too hot during extended use, briefly dip it in water to cool it down before continuing.
Keep the Surface Clear
Remove tissues, plastic containers, or any flammable items from your workbench. Hot glass or tools can ignite them immediately.
No Thin Glass Strings
Always pinch and melt off cleanly β never pull glass into thin tails. Thin strings create sparks when reheated, which is a fire and injury risk.
Finished Pieces Are Still Hot
After finishing a piece, wait at least 10β20 minutes before touching it. Never pick it up out of curiosity β if it falls it may shatter or jump toward you.
Keep Work on the Pad
Do not lift hot glass closer to your body. Keep all hot pieces flat on the graphite pad at all times. If they fall, serious burns can result.
Turning Off the Flame
When your session ends, please ask a staff member to turn off the torch safely. Do not attempt to turn it off yourself.
